User interface design (UI) is notoriously difficult because it involves disparate skills: deep software development skills and a deep understanding of human needs.
The UI industry is guided by design thinking to achieve UI that works. Interaction Design Foundation defines design thinking as a “non-linear, iterative process which seeks to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions to prototype and test”.

According to the Foundation, design thinking involves five stages that is very effective in resolving complex design problems. The stages are:
1. Empathic understanding – investigating and understanding the human needs involved.
2. Defining the problem – framing the problem from a human-centric perspective.
3. Ideating – brainstorming different ideas.
4. Prototyping – coming up with a diverse range of solutions.
5. Testing – testing the different solutions.
Simply put: design thinking is a human-centric approach to problem-solving.
